Italian soccer teams may be forced to play in empty stadiums

February 7, 2007 - 4:55 pm

According to the AP, the Italian Cabinet may establish strict security measures and a ban on selling tickets to visiting teams in the wake of the killing of a policeman in a soccer riot last week. Deputy Interior Minister Marco Minniti is worried that the stadiums will be empty: “The measures are severe and without precedent,” he said. “Our objective isn’t to play the games behind closed doors.”

If Italy wants to play soccer in empty stadiums, they could save money on implementing new security measures and just hold their matches in the U.S.

But…if Luis Figo is coming then Italy can count on at least one ticket being sold at the US stadium. Not only will I attend the match, sit as close to the field as possible and scream “GOOOOOAAAAAL” for either scoring team, I will personally and selflessly volunteer my after-game services to Figo and hose him down when he’s done playing. Yes. Yes, I will.
