Diligent about the talent that many never see, Martinez’s keen eye led him to Gallery 5 + 5’s premiere artist, Chobo. Martinez discovered Gallery 5 + 5 Opening Artist Chobo’s, pronounced (hobo), born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, work in a small San Diego restaurant, prompting him to offer the Czech Republic native financial support for four months so that he could devote his entire attention to painting. Chobo created the twenty pieces that will be Gallery 5 + 5’s opening installation. San Diego Gallery 5 + 5 Opening Artist “Chobo” Presents Hezky Exhibition

Opening Gala April 21st, 2007, to benefit “The National Breast Cancer Foundation” (NBCF)

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE) — “Chobo” the founder of a new style of painting, Imperfectionism, will be showing his latest work at Gallery 5+5. The “Hezky” (Hezky, meaning beautiful in Czechoslovakian) exhibit looks to highlight the undeniable shift in the style of his recent paintings. While he remains true to his basic principles shown in his early creations his recent work has changed in many subtle ways.

Chobo’s Imperfectionism of early 2000 was conceived out of radical acceptance of imperfection in the creative process. Instead of hiding the imperfections, they are embraced as inspirational stimuli and promoted to become an integral part of the ultimate outcome. This approach gives his work a remarkable depth and reveals several levels of appearance of its components exposing the secret to the process of artistic creation.

Recently, Chobo’s Imperfectionism appeared to have matured-after overcoming the grooving pains of its childhood. It appears as if several confluent factors have
contributed to the change. His work is calmer, quieter, and conveys a sense of content and harmony. This may be a reflection of Chobo’s mind set, as he appears more comfortable and less conflict ridden in his approach to painting, and perhaps, to his life as well.

He has also made a qualitative step forward in the conceptualization of his paintings. You can see this demonstrated by his increased level of selectivity and thoughtfulness in choosing the elements in his paintings to highlight and attract interest toward. He has also become a much better ‘ Gestaltist ‘ – his exploits into complex relations between the figure and the background have finally come to fruition.

He has found a fortunate formula between the two, time and time again, both spatially in composition and the use of color. He has progressed into successfully using less differentiated silhouettes on even less differentiated backgrounds. This gives the painting a hazy/dreamy, foggy/ lightness unseen before.

Finally, his early paintings were not made for you to like them; they were not meant to elicit pleasurable sensation. They simply demanded respect for his way of painting, his way of grasping objects, animals, and people – like it or not. I believe that his recent works conveys a little different message. He no longer expects to be misunderstood, mislabeled and second guessed. Consequently, he doesn’t need to adopt a provocative attitude towards the viewer any longer. A much desired result of this is that his recent work tends to build a much better bridge between his canvas and your eyes. As he got closer to himself he also got closer to you. All in all, clearly Chobo has again progressed in perfecting his Imperfectionism-if such a thing ever existed.
