Modern Tijuana

People always ask me where to eat when they visit Tijuana. My answer often is, “I have no freakin’ clue.” I’m a vegetarian who tries not to eat cheese. Traditional Mexican food, needless to say, is not my forte. I mostly stay home and eat rice, beans and tortillas. Sometimes I get crazy and fry up some nopales (cactus).

Last night, though, I stumbled across a gem. Dolce Salato is a new deli and dessert joint located at 9864 Blvd. Agua Caliente in Tijuana’s Colonia Revolucion, an up-and-coming neighborhood if you ask me (I saw an all-vegetarian restaurant just a few blocks down).

I had the vegetarian sandwich made of grilled portobello, onions and peppers and a wonderfully fresh Insalata Caprese. My date had a philly cheesesteak sandwich with fries. Both were adequately scrumptious, made even better by the fresh cracked pepper and salt (I love grinding things; I’m a sucker for the sound and smell of it). The desserts looked amazing, but I didn’t have room left in my belly to squeeze one in.

The best thing about the whole evening was the restaurant’s clean, modern interior and exterior design. The owner, Carlos Severiano Flores, said his cousin designed the place. It’s truly beautiful, and it makes the food taste that much better.

Cien An~os has really good salads and vegetarian (though not vegan) crepes. Also El Lugar Del Nopal has good vegetarian pastas and sandwiches (and music!).

oh yeah, and i used to sometimes go to a joint acroos from the old bullring called Vallarta Natural. I don’t know if it’s still there, but they had many good vegetarian options. I look forward to trying Dolce Salato; thanks for the tip.
