Street Scene Lineup: First hints

May 7, 2007 - 8:20 pm

People are often asking me if I have insight into the Street Scene lineup. Believe me, I’ve considered placing recording equpment outside of Rob Hagey’s office. But, even emboldened by the Patriot Act, decided against it. However, there are clues. Namely, Austin City Limits. The festival happens the week before Street Scene. Many of the bands booked will be on the “summer festival circuit” and will fly to San Diego to play S.S. Del Mar.

The Austinist has the scoop on the first big names announced for ACL 2007. Looking at the list and cross-referencing existing tour schedules, I’d take a guess that these bands have good Vegas odds…

The White Stripes–A very safe bet. New album, huge market for them, etc.

Björk–An artistic stretch, but Street Scene has a history of booking Coachella bands.

The Decemberists–Nope, in Europe.

Peter, Bjorn, and John–Probably, but man what a boring show at Coachella.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela–Damn, I hope so. They’re rad, and goes with Live Nation’s stated desire to get more Latin acts.

Joss Stone–Sounds likely. Has played a few San Diego shows to build fanbase here recently, and she’ll already have crossed the pond. Why go back to the miserable UK rain a week before you have to?

Andrew Bird–Makes sense. He’s played SD a few times recently at smaller shows. Becoming a target market.

Gotan Project–Yeah. Crosses the divide between live and electronica that S.S. books.

Augustana–Most likely. Claim “San Diego” on their MySpace page. No matter how many people debate their 619ness.

Kings Of Leon–Sure.

Stephen Marley–No. Opening for Dave Matthews at Coors a week later. Most likely will be contractually banned.

Ben Kweller–His people will lobby for it, probably. His new album drops in September.

Rev. Horton Heat–Probably. San Diego’s got a huge rockabilly scene, and their tour ends the week before.

also, im glad augustana claims 619 on their myspace page. i don’t think their “sandiegoness” is in doubt by anyone, but the fact is they played one show at soma and got signed to epic, so their scene “cool points” total remains lodged firmly at “zero” even if the geography is not questioned.

said a&r guy who signed augustana “dude, they sound like lifehouse.” end quote.
