Free light bulb swap at Birch Aquarium

July 12, 2007 - 9:22 am

One of the simplest ways for the home consumer to make a little dent in the global warming problem is simply to switch light bulbs. Those swirly fluorescent bulbs are brighter, last longer and will save money on your electric bill. Rumor has it that the compact fluorescents had a nasty color, but it just ain’t so. I’ve switched out all the bulbs in my apartment and the new bulbs are brighter and they cast the same pleasant yellow light as the old incandescents. The only downside I’ve noticed is they can take 30 seconds or so to reach full brightness.

Anyway, to get rid of any excuse for not having a least giving the compact fluorescents a try, San Diego Gas & Electric will be offering a free light bulb exchange at Birch Aquarium in La Jolla from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays July 21, August 18 and September 15. Bring five incandescents and/or two halogen bulbs and get the same number of compact fluorescents back free. Remember, one compact fluorescent bulb saves as much carbon over its lifetime as if you didn’t drive your car for two weeks. it’s not much, but it’s a start.
