Buffy dorks unite!

August 15, 2007 - 8:45 pm

I’ll admit it—I’m a Buffy dork.

The “Buffy” I’m referring to is, of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You can laugh all you want, but there’s just something about that show—I can’t get enough! Most of it is the supremely campy “cheese-factor” of it all—the constant barrage of increasingly ridiculous situations in which our heroine finds herself, episode after nail-biting episode. And no matter how preposterous the situation becomes, Buffy always finds a way out of the mess—usually with a couple ass-kicking fight scenes and wild cheers from the television-viewing audience at the end.

The “cheese-factor” of the series peaked with the airing of “Once More, With Feeling”, the musical episode of Buffy in which the residents of Sunnydale, including every character in the series, are strangely compelled to burst out in song at nearly every turn—oftentimes with matching choreography. In short, the episode was brilliant.

So why am I clogging up LBOE with all of this nonsense? Because, as NPR reported last month, “Once More, With Feeling,” the Buffy musical, has embarked on a nationwide tour—and it’s making a stop right here in San Diego!

“Once More, With Feeling”

According to The Buffy Musical Big Screen Extravaganza website, the sing-along tour, very much in the same vein as the live version of Rocky Horror Picture Show (most of you, I would assume, lost your RHPS virginity long ago), is stopping over at Ken Cinema for, not one, but two(!) midnight showings on Friday, Oct. 5, and Saturday, Oct. 6.

The Landmark Theatres website describes the event like this:

Series creator Joss Whedon poured his heart and soul into “Once More, With Feeling,” the surprisingly effective musical episode from Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s sixth season. He wrote and composed all the songs, each one catered to the cast and character’s strengths, and even extended the length of the show in order to cram in more tunes. Buffy fans are invited to watch their favorite episode on the giant screen, surrounded by a theatre filled with singing, shouting and laughing friends. We turn on the subtitles and lead the audience in a sing-along with all the characters. And, in the tradition of Rocky Horror and other interactive fan favorites, we offer goodie bags filled with tools for participating in the show. Before the film, audience members are invited to participate in a Buffy-oke contest and show off their own acting skills, show off their knowledge of Buffy trivia, and have a chance to win cool Buffy prizes.

…I’ve already bought my tickets.
