More from the gay marriage vote
I’ve started talking to council members about the City Council’s failed vote Tuesday to send a letter of support on the gay marriage case to the state Supreme Court. As I wrote yesterday, Donna Frye supports gay marriage but had procedural concerns (citizens weren’t given enough notice to weigh in on the letter) and so voted against sending the letter. The council will vote again on Sept. 18.
Councilmember Kevin Faulconer would not explain why he opposed the measure, nor did he speak during the City Council session on Tuesday. His spokeswoman, Jamie Fox Rice, returned my call to tell me he had no comment.
Councilmember Tony Young reiterated his long-held position that marriage is between a man and a woman.
“I have a lot of support from the gay and lesbian community, but we disagree in this case,” he said. “I do support civil unions—I think people should have an opportunity to do that, I think that is something the council has supported. But when it comes to a definition of what marriage is, it should be the way that it has been for the last thousands of years.”
