Aguirre and Sanders: Press releases at 20 paces

September 17, 2007 - 8:40 pm

A federal judge’s ruling earlier this month to protect the endangered delta smelt, a tiny fish found only in the Sacramento/San Joaquin river delta, will mean a lot less water flowing to Southern California. The ruling caused City Attorney Mike Aguirre to revive the idea of purifying sewage water for drinking water (or, as opponents call it “toilet-to-tap”). That set off a series of dueling press releases between Aguirre and Mayor Jerry Sanders (all-caps preserved where used):

9/4 4:38 p.m. (Aguirre) City Attorney News Briefing … 2. Future Water Shortages in Southern California
9/13 9:17 a.m. (Sanders) News Conference – Mayor Sanders Reiterates Opposition to Toilet-to-Tap Water Recycling Process for City
9/14 4:35 p.m. (Aguirre) CITY ATTORNEY URGES SAN DIEGANS TO ENGAGE IN THE PUBLIC DEBATE OVER HOW TO GAIN WATER INDEPENDENCE
9/17 9:01 a.m. (Aguirre) City Attorney – San Diegans Already Drinking Recycled Water
9/17 2:05 p.m. (Sanders) Mayor’s Office – Fact Sheet and Memo re: Water Reuse
9/17 5:32 p.m. (Aguirre) CITY ATTORNEY URGES MAYOR TO IMPLEMENT ACTION PLAN TO CONSERVE WATER AND CALLS ON CITY COUNCIL TO ADOPT CITY’S WATER REUSE STUDY

Will the saga continue?
