It’s official: KLSD gone
October 18, 2007 - 7:54 am
Updating a previous post, I finally heard back from KLSD program director Cliff Albert. Here’s what he said:
“It changes to sports talk in early November. We are trying to find alternate home for progressive talk format.”
Now CityBeat is the only progressive media outlet in town.

David Rolland “Now CityBeat is the only progressive media outlet in town.”
That’s funny! You don’t appear to have any understanding as to what “progressive” means. You never made an attempt to support KLSD and Stacy Taylor, almost as if you wanted them to fail. Perhaps you never noticed but KLSD has many more listeners than your “progressive media outlet.”
It sounds like you just listen to KOGO and Roger Hedgecock, and avoid progressive talk radio. Yeah, I know, you just need to get the other side of the story out there – as if they need help. Give me a break!
Native, I’m really curious: What are you basing your comments on? You obviously have no idea that for more than a year, maybe two years, I’ve appeared on Stacy’s show almost every week. We endorse progressive candidates for elective office. We advocate for civil rights for gay citizens and immigrants. We’ve supported higher living and minimum wages and universal healthcare. We’ve repeatedly railed against the Bush administration for its war mongering and attacks on civil liberties. We’ve urged better treatment of homeless citizens. We support policies that would close the income gap and grow the middle class.
Are you living in some sort of opposite universe?
You just discovered the KLSD story. Wow! You are def not a progressive outlet; where’d you get that idea? You don’t even seem to have readers, as far as can be discerned by the number of comments. The Reader and all the great reporters there will be giggling over your self-appointed status. The few Friday minutes in which Dave snuck into Stacy’s studio and offered not much (oh, wait, last time he revealed he wasn’t sure if he liked Aguirre or not…deep) were missed by me when you reported them here. Oh well. Bye-bye.
Real Progressive (highly dubious claim),
We did not just discover the story; we’ve been covering it for weeks.
And I’m dying to know what about the Reader you find progressive. Please tell me. What, because Bauder supports Aguirre (we do, too, just not sycophantically)?
I’m not sure you even know the meaning of the word “progressive.”
Sorry to get you angry, Dave, but what real progress is mostly about is change. It’s not about being “liberal” per se, or agreeing with “liberal” positions. And I think if you really want to be considered progressive, you have to be about change and devote a lot more time to the hard, unpopular battles. “Progressive” relates to progress: if things are good, then progressives look to find ways to make them better. If things are bad, progressives fight even harder to make them better; this is why writers at the Reader, and people like Flannery at blogogsandiego.com, are real progressives: they point out/document the wrongs, do the hard work of in-detail reporting, and take it as a given that they will not be able to pick up the phone, as you can, and talk to Fred Sainz, for example. Progressivism isn’t to be confused with politics: the Voice, to which you constantly allude and provide a link to on your website, is a political entity, not a progressive entity, and seems to be oddly allied in some way to the U-T and City Hall, in the orchestrated manner in which they participate in the “news” flow in San Diego politics. Your writings espouse a certain liberal bent, on a small scale, but lastblog is def not progressive. It’s mostly cute and artsy, which I enjoy. But you have never advocated a wider embrace of the many diligent, hard-facts blogster progressives in San Diego. OK?
You tell ‘em, Dave!
Please, “Real Progressive,” I’m eating my lunch here…
A-hem, “Real Progressive”? You claim that being a “real progressive” means encouraging and enacting change? Well, then I think that CityBeat has succeeded spectacularly. As a reader, I am so grateful to the fair and progressive coverage offered in CityBeat over these past 5 years, and therefore I believe their mere existence is in itself a real tangible progressive change in the landscape of San Diego media. Thank god they do have the access to just pick up the phone and call these city officials. I depend on them to do just that. They ask the questions that are on the tip of my tongue and provide answers that I can then act upon. And I enjoy reading the blog on a regular basis. Just because there are relatively few comments compared to other site does not mean there are few readers. Also, I run into people on the street all the time that have endless praise for CityBeat for being a true progressive voice. Honestly. I find it particularly hilarious that the Reader and ‘progressive’ would be used in the same sentence. In my humble opinion, the Reader is only good for two things: 1) concert listings 2) bird cage liner.
To a great degree, the gauge of a paper’s perspective has to be its editorial perspective. There may be some writers at The Reader who have progressive leanings (Thomas Larson comes to mind), but what gets into the paper is decided by the editor. And the editor of the Reader is a staunch anti-abortion, anti-birth control Catholic–not exactly a progressive perspective. I think Dave’s claim that without KLSD CityBeat is the only real progressive media outlet is fair. He is referring to the overall attitude of the paper with him at the helm. He is not saying that a progressive opinion never appears in the Reader. Hell, an ocassional progressive editorial makes it into the Union Tribune, but who would make a case for that being a progressive media outlet?
Real Progressive, you write that “lastblog is def not progressive.” Dave never made that claim. He said CityBeat is progressive, and CityBeat’s a newsweekly, not a blog.
Regardless, progressivism is a political stance and it’s one that advocates, traditionally, for social justice. Dat be CityBeat.
Yeah, can’t we progressives just all get a long? To bicker and fight about who is more progressive than who seems just, well, not very progressive, no?
Ooh, I meant to say *along*. But really, aren’t we heartbroken enough with the loss of KLSD?
At least we now have Kittle radio. Btw, his call-in number is 866-818-6384, or 866-818-METH, which is what you’ll need to be on if you listen to this pucker trout. On his first show yesterday, I particularly liked how he contracted amnesia re: Sanders and Sunroad. Now that’s progressive!
