One of the major complaints about downtown, including the Gaslamp Quarter and East Village, is that it doesn’t seem to have been built for San Diegans, but for tourists. Today’s New York Times essentially confirms that view. They interview second-home owners from Las Vegas, Arizona and the northeast, but check out this stat from the representative of downtown developer Bosa Development Corporation: 15-20 percent of the home owners downtown are second-home owners. No wonder it seems like the place is jammed with strangers all the time.

If by great you mean an overvalued and depreciating asset…
