They say that politics makes strange bedfellows.
That explains, I suppose, why I received an email this evening from the Dennis Kucinich campaign, touting an upcoming fundraiser hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Flynt. Yup, as in, that Larry Flynt.
The subject line was “Exlusive VIP Invitation,” but I’m guessing that had more to do with my location than my VIP-ness. Though, who knows, maybe I’m far more important than I think. Let’s hope so. Here’s the text of the email–you get the idea:
Dear Anders Wright
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Flynt and Host Committee Woody Harrelson, Ed Norton, Jodie Evans, & Max Palevsky cordially invite you to attend a special evening as they honor:
Democratic Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich
On November 16, 2007 From 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm
in the 10th Floor Suite of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Flynt
Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be provided.$500 – Supporter
$1,000 – Friend
$2,300 – Host
As you probably know, Woody Harrelson who earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for playing Flynt in The People vs. Larry Flynt, while Edward Norton played Flynt’s lawyer in the same picture. Jodie Evans is one of the big Code Pinkers, and Max Palevsky is one of those goofy-rich, fairly interesting dudes.
Of course, as bedfellows, this coupling actually makes decent sense. Flynt has long stood for more than easily obtainable pictures of hardcore sex–no matter what you think of him, he’s been a staunch defender of the First Amendment for quite some time. Kucinich, for his part, is the darling of the left left–and his wife is pretty hot, too. Synchronicity.
Sadly, the price of admission is a little beyond my means (although there is a “Will contribute at the event” option on the RSVP). It’s too bad, because I’d love to see what kind of cocktails and snackies the Flynts put out at a party.

Anders,
I also got a VIP invitation to this on the 16th, and I also (currently) am living in San Diego. I have been a little active in the campaign, been to a couple of meetings and met a few people, so I assume that’s how I got on this list? that and the address I’m staying at may have something to do with it? I’m not exactly sure…
But, as you noted, there was “contribute at the event” option on the RSVP page, and I checked that! I’m pretty broke (please keep that to yourself!) but I’m GOING and I’m gonna tell them that I already donated, if they make an issue of it, which I seriously don’t think they will. Or I might offer Larry to donate for him, so he can get another $2300 donated (I checked and that’s how much he donated, the maximum I think)
Either way, how can I afford to pass this up? Heck there’s gonna be “hor d’ouevres and cocktails” and it’s in Bev Hills and some famous people are gonna be there and, well, I am a supporter anyways.
You should go, in fact I’m willing to share the ride up there and split gas if you are as broke as I am!
email me either way, cuz i’d like to know how or why i and you got invited, ok? thanks!

Anders, I have two words for you: “PRESS PASS.”
