The madness of the Iowa caucus

The Iowa Caucuses this year may be more influential than ever, since a big Mike Huckabee win legitimizes his candidacy in all the subsequent Republican primaries, and a third place finish for Hillary Clinton could shatter the sense of inevitability she’s worked so hard to cultivate. But lest you think you have a grasp on what actually happens at the at a caucus, take a look at this William Saletan piece about the 1988 Iowa Caucus for American Politics, reprinted by Slate.com. It’s madness on a Lovecraftian scale.

This year networks are planning entrance polls, the results of which will be broadcast DURING the caucuses. Democracy at its finest. But Iowa sure is fun during caucus season.
The caucus system seems really outdated. I prefer to just cast my vote in a primary. I don’t particularly want to be told that my vote for M. Mouse isn’t viable.
(Doesn’t “Lovecraftian” require tentacled demon aliens to consume people? )
Lovecraftian also involves terrifying labyrinths filled with dreadful angles! Oh the hideous angles!
