City Council: Foie gras is bad

The San Diego City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to encourage San Diegans to “avoid supporting” the “extreme form of animal cruelty” that is foie gras. Brought to the council by the San Diego-based Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL), a group the resolution specifically commends, the action follows the signing of a state law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that will ban the sale or production of foie gras in California at the beginning of 2012.

Foie gras is artificially fattened duck or goose liver produced by the force-feeding of the birds. The resolution cites a 2007 Zogby poll that says 85 percent of San Diegans want foie gras banned within city limits.

CityBeat published a cover story on the practice two years ago.

I admit it. I’ve had it, and it’s about the tastiest thing there is. We all have our vices
