The NAFTA effect

James Cooper, director of the international legal studies program at California Western, is back from his most recent travels to Latin America with a new video, Not in My Backyard, the third in a series of documentaries about the mostly ignored effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The documentary, made to look as though it were a reality television show, stars Cooper’s law students and focuses on the environmental problems that NAFTA brings about. Not in My Backyard will screen at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Lecture Hall 1 (LH1) at Cal Western, 225 Cedar St., Downtown, followed by a reception at 6:30 p.m. featuring food, music and a fashion show featuring human-rights-minded clothing by another international-justice program Cooper is part of, ACCESO. The ACCESO’s spring collection features the Latin America Matters and Not in My Backyard T-shirts, two tops that remind wearers and viewers to take a look at things U.S. companies get away with under the NAFTA agreement.
