Truth, you didn’t get the point: the universality of angst, as penned by Miller and filmed with Malkovich, is undeniable. Demanding that our politicians and candidates be cardboard cutouts of perfection – Stepford politicians – is ridiculous. Accusations of “mental instability” by enemies of John McCain, Al Gore, and Mike Aguirrre, for example, are standard rightwing hate politics. Aguirre is right to poke back.

This transcript is UNBELIEVABLE! You don’t have to be a mental health professional to see that Aguirre is a troubled man. I think that Roth handled himself very well. It’s a little concerning when the city’s elected city attorney sees conspiracies and boogeymen around every corner. And now that he has enlisted his trust deputy — McGrath — is the conspiracy game, we have two crazies handling our legal affairs. BIZARRE. You couldn’t write a better soap opera.

R – Alright , we had it out and I’m going and I’m not writing anymore. Now, if people ask where I am, what I’m doing, you don’t know, you don’t care..that way it’ll be off your mind and you can start brightening up again, alright?……….That clears it up then, huh?….You gonna wish me luck, scout?

A – SPITE! Spite! That is the word of your undoing!..and when you’re down to that, you remember what did it, when you’re rotting somewhere beside a railroad track, you remember and don’t you dare blame it on me!!!!!!

R – You don’t know who we are! The man is gonna know the truth!!..We never told the truth for ten minutes in this house!! Today, I realised something about myself..and I tried to explain it to you and I think I’m just not smart enough to make sense out of it for you…to hell with whose fault it is or anything like that, let’s just wrap it up now, Mike..*extends hand* Now, c’mon, we’ll tell Kittle…

R – I ran down eleven flights with a pen in my hand today and suddenly I stopped, do you hear me?!!! and in the middle of this office building…d’you hear this!!! I stopped!! In the middle of this building, I saw the sky…and I saw the things that I love in this world…the work…and the food…and..the time to sit and smoke..and I looked at the pen in my hand and I said ‘What the hell am I grabbing this for?’ Why am I trying to become what I don’t want to be? What am I doing in an office?..Making a contemptuous, begging fool of myself when all I want is out there waiting for me the minute I say ‘I know who I am’, now, why can’t I say that, Mike?’
