City Attorney race: Dan Coffey likely to drop out and endorse Scott Peters

March 6, 2008 - 8:39 am

Attorney Dan Coffey is running for City Attorney. City Council President Scott Peters is running for City Attorney. Why did the Peters campaign just announce that both men would be at the same press conference at 12:30 today for “a major announcement”? Well, the last time the Peters campaign had a “major announcement”, it was so that attorney Lee Burdick, then a contender of the City Attorney job, could drop out of the race and endorse Peters. Presumably the same thing will happen with Coffey, but we’ll confirm that for you later.

I had lunch with Coffey a few weeks ago (I couldn’t bring myself to have coffee with Coffey.) and it was pretty clear his whole campaign was about unseating incumbent Mike Aguirre, who is running for reelection. He had some unkind words for another challenger, attorney Amy Lepine, but mostly he spent an hour denouncing Aguirre as unethical and likely to get disbarred. Still speculating here, but I’m guessing that he’s decided Peters has the best chance to knock Aguirre out of the race, and plus Peters, like Coffey, is a Democrat. That leaves Peters, Lepine, Aguirre, former state legislator Jan Goldsmith, and City Councilmember Brian Maienschein vying for the job.
