Big Fat screw-up

March 15, 2008 - 9:47 pm

It’s baseball time again, and in San Diego, that means it’s cringe time for fans who listen to Padres TV announcers Matt Vasgersian and Mark Grant.

Tonight, as Vasgersian and Grant were calling the second game in a historic two-game exhibition series between the Padres and Dodgers in Beijing, China—the first Major League Baseball games ever played in China—Grant noted that it happens to be the Year of the Rat in Chinese culture. Vasgersian asked what the significance of that is. Grant admitted he didn’t know. Vasgersian then suggested they contact San Diego restaurateur Tom Fat, longtime business leader and owner of eateries China Camp and Fat City, and ask him. Grant commented that he hasn’t seen Fat in a while.

That’s because Fat lost a battle against cancer last May and died.

That’s some good work, fellas.

Even though they must now know, they are so … I think they’ll still try to contact him.

I don’t cringe when I hear Matt and Mudd.
I think they are great. I can’t wait for Ch4 to be in full effect.

I admit they can be funny at times — but you don’t even cringe with they say they haven’t seen a dead guy in a while? A well-known dead guy?

Or the fact that they’re in China and didn’t bother to find out the significance of the Year of the Rat? Cultural dolts. Oh…wait…they’re baseball fans.
    That explains everything.

Oh my god… Matt and Mark are the absolute worst! The are the biggest dorks, but not in a good way. I usually like dorks. I am a dork. But they are lame ego-dorks. Or perhaps you’re right, Aaryn, dolt is a better term. Mark used to not be that bad, but his man-crush for Matt has turned ridiculous. I can’t stand it when he sycophantically calls him “Matty”. Ugh.

And their insight on the game is significantly lacking. I love my Padres, but wish I had a radio tuner so I could turn down the volume on the TV and listen to Jerry Coleman instead. Tony Gwynn was painful when he first made his transition to calling the came, but his on-air presence has improved significantly in the last couple years, and at least he knows what the fuck he’s talking about.

We heard a rumor a year or two that Matt was going to go up to cover the Dodgers. I thought we had finally unloaded the garbage for your enjoyment, Dave. Thanks for nuthin. ;)

Too bad about Tom Fat. Nice guy with a legendary family out of Sacramento…
