When I first set out to write a story on a new BBW club in San Diego, I had no idea there was so much going on in the size-acceptance movement.  There’s a lot I missed.  Here’s an e-mail from a plus-size clothing purveyor that just came in:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FASHION OVERDOSE: CELEBRATING THE OBSESSION OF FEMININE CURVE

Fashion Overdose Premiers Their Edgy, Couture Clothing Line at This Year’s 1st ever Spring Up Plus-Size Sale, Where Women of All Shapes and Sizes Will Be Expanding the Aura of Female Beauty Inside and Out
San Diego, California, March 29th – 30th, 2008 9am-4pm:  Fashion Overdose launches this season’s unique and edgy new designs at the FOD Spring Up Sale in sunny San Diego located at 5205 Kearny Villa Wy San Diego, CA 92123.  Fashion designers at FOD will introduce its newest line to women blessed with shapely figures and bodacious bodily curves.  FOD will be recruiting for their upcoming fashion show where curvaceous models will strut this year’s latest couture styles.  In addition, FOD will have selected items at up to 80% retail prices available for lookers and buyers who would like to place orders and check out their entire line.

The Fashion Overdose Spring Up Plus-Size Sale is the ultimate size acceptance fashion day.   Making sure that all women have the confidence and self-esteem to face the obstacles of everyday life is the focus of FOD and providing every woman with the most modern clothing regardless their size is one way they contribute to empowering women all over the country.  FOD’s fashion show will be giving plus size women the opportunity to experience being a supermodel and allow them to walk the catwalk just like the celebrities shown on television.

Judy, an attendee from 2007’s BBW Bash quotes, “Everyone is drawn to people who exude confidence – there is a certain energy that comes from a confident person…That’s one thing I love about the bash … we women inspire each other to be ourselves and love it.  True self acceptance is contagious!” This quote sums up the philosophy that FOD strives to live by.  Look for Fashion Overdose’s clothes online at www.FashionOverdose.com and enjoy the hottest fashion shopping of the season!

What caught my attention about the article wasn’t the article itself, but the ad on the last page of the article. I don’t have a copy of citybeat with me right now, but it had a crudely drawn face with its mouth open and said “Being Fat Sucks” and then had a phone number for some sort of weight loss group. I hope it was just a coincidence, but thats pretty insensitive nonetheless.

It was a coincidence. While it shows the wall between editorial/ad here at CityBeat, I have to admit that the ad caught me as an unpleasant surprise as well. Although…I haven’t called the number yet. It may be a support group and not a weight-loss ad, which would be a lot better. I’ll have to call soon to figure it all out.

I just wanted to let you know that the BBW article was excellent. It was extremely sensitive and positive. And thanks for the plus-size clothing memo, too!
