Wow.
The San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council is really gunning for District 5 City Council candidate Carl DeMaio. I received this today in my personal e-mail inbox. It depicts DeMaio as a “tax violator,” a “carpetbagger,” a stinky lobbyist and an opportunist who receives public money via no-bid government contracts and then uses that money to campaign for cuts in government services.
It also solicits more “dirt” on DeMaio by linking to a gmail account.
The San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council represents 110 different employee unions that, in turn, represent 100,000 “working families,” the group says. The DeMaio attack appears to be the coming-out party thrown by the Labor Council’s new political team—Lorena Gonzalez, who recently took over for chief Jerry Butkiewitz, and Evan McLaughlin, the former voiceofsandiego.org City Hall reporter who took Gonzalez’s old job as political director.
Ironically, the Labor Council has not made an endorsement in the District 5 race, in which Republican DeMaio will face retired firefighter George George, a Democrat. In other City Council races, the group has endorsed Democrats Marti Emerald (District 7) and Sherri Lightner (District 1). In District 3, it couldn’t decide among Democrats Todd Gloria, John Hartley and Stephen Whitburn, so it endorsed all three.
McLaughlin says an endorsement in District 5 will be announced after a Labor Council delegates meeting on Wednesday. I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict that DeMaio won’t get the nod.
