If I Were Me
Things are tight (both devoid of extra space and tiiiiight) in CityBeat this week with the Local Music Issue set to break its restraints and lumber out into the streets of San Diego to terrorize unsuspecting villagers when it hits the racks tomorrow.
As such, there is no room for a conventional music section nor an “If I Were U” roundup of the top concerts for the upcoming week. Fret not. Here’s a truncated list of shows that you (or at least I) won’t wanna miss in the days ahead:
Thursday, March 27
Chores, The Prids @ Beauty Bar. Indie rapscallions from Portland.
Archways @ The Casbah. Indie rapscallions from L.A. with, presumably, a thing for flying buttresses.
Friday, March 28
GZA @ ‘Canes. The Genius performs Liquid Swords in its entirety. To paraphrase SDCB calendar editor Todd Kroviak: sweeeeeeeeet. Actually, that’s a direct quote.
Tokyo Police Club @ SOMA. Not a fraternal organization of Japanese law-enforcement but, rather, a Canadian indie rock band and SXSW/Coachella hype monger.
Grand Ole Party, The Muslims, Red Feathers @ Che Cafe. If you wanna knock three San Diego buzz bands off your “to-do” list in one fell swoop, here ya go.
Saturday, March 29
The Black Keys @ House of Blues. Yes, the Keys show is already sold-out. But that didn’t stop John Wilkes Booth. And no, I don’t really know what that means.
Grand Royal MC Battle (featuring KRS-One) @ Alliance MMA. An MC battle in a Mixed Martial Arts facility in Chula Vista with KRS-One? Strange enough to actually be true.
San Diego Indie Music Fest/The Show on Ray Street @ North Park. Read all about the minor baby mama musical drama going down in NP in the March 26 CityBeat.
Sunday, March 30
A Flock of Seagulls, Dramarama, Gene Loves Jezebel, When in Rome, Real Life @ House of Blues. Some people hate these ’80s where-are-they-now one-offs. I am not one of those people. But that might be because I ran. I ran so far away. I just ran, I ran all night and day. And, in the end, I couldn’t get away.
Tuesday, April 1
Wu-Tang Clan, Led Zeppelin, Men Without Hats, Grand Ole Party @ My House. It’s just a little sumthin sumthin I put together for my weekly backyard barbecue. Bring chips.

Uh, Nate… I believe the quote was “saah-weeeeet,” not “sweeeeeeeeet.” I will not stand for these inaccuracies.
Let the record show that I not only quoted Mr. Kroviak accurately, I actually went through the trouble of counting how many “e”s he put in “sweet.” There are nine. And no, I can’t think of anything better to do with my time.
