Commonwealth Cafe, R.I.P.
As of June 3, North Park’s “Late Nite Diner”—Commonwealth Cafe—is closed, citing increased food costs among other things. Commonwealth and Bluefoot Bar, located next door, had trouble with a neighbor who opposed both venues’ plans to stay open past midnight (even though a nearby Jack-in-the-Box is open 24 hours). Also, reportedly, Commonwealth was wrangling with the city over a permit for its outdoor picnic tables. It was a cute spot—definitely added character to the area. And they served a good veggie burger.
Update: Jack-in-the-Box closes at 2 a.m.

They did not serve a good veggie burger!
That place was disgusting…
It was anything BUT disgusting. They had character and charm. The people were proud to work there, the venue was welcoming, the food was great, and their NEW veggie burgers were outstanding. They were one of my favorite places to visit. I will miss them
I had a great veggie burger there—that’s all I’m sayin’.
I really wanted to like it, but couldn’t. I thought the food there was OK at best, and kinda greasy, and the menu wasn’t very inspiring.
I went in there almost as soon as it opened, but was uninspired and only went in once more after that. If you were in the Bluefoot and needed something to line the stomach, Picante’s always won out.
Location was good though.
Please! Good food and reasonable prices would have allowed the Commonwealth to prevail. Operating hours had nothing to do with their demise. The Linkery, Alexander’s and Lefty’s have demonstrated that in this neighborhood. Besides, only the drive thru is open past midnight for JBX and that closes at 2PM…
Oops—I believe you’re right about the 24-hour thing. You mean 2 a.m., though. Fine, debate the food; it was still a nice addition. And I still say the veggie burger rocked.
