Just based on their names, Frye & DeMaio sound like a law firm, the sort of LLC that might be found at the bottom of a contract formally merging two banks. But as politicians, Councilmember Donna Frye (D6-Mission Valley) and Councilmember-elect Carl DeMaio (D5 – Rancho Bernardo) are a pretty unlikely pair. Frye is a liberal populist, renowned or reviled (depending on your bent) throughout San Diego for her preference for clean water, helping San Diegans who need it most, and demanding public debate and openness in government. DeMaio is the conservative, small-government, anti-tax, use private competition to re-invent government activist who turned up in San Diego just a few years ago demanding a fiscal accounting and openness in government
Ah, I get it now. It’s the whole openness in government thing, isn’t it? DeMaio and Frye are teaming up on Monday for the “launch of bipartisan effort to create a package of reforms regarding how the City Council conducts business, manages legislation, and interacts with the public” because “The City Council needs to enhance its effectiveness as a legislative body as well as restore public confidence and trust in the Council.”
Frye media fellow Kevin Smith declined to share with me the details of their proposal. So we’ll just have to wait until Monday.
