Fire season is upon us
KPBS is reporting that a car accident lit off a 30-acre, fast-moving blaze in East County, just west of the Imperial County line. The nearest town is Borrego Springs, just outside Anza-Borrego State Park. The fire joins a 3.1-acre brush fire near Rancho Bernardo and the Indians Fire in central California which has burned 65 square miles of wilderness since it began June 8 in alerting all of us that another fire season has already begun.
Experts have been predicting a bad fire season this year because winter rain promoted the growth of lots of grass and shrubs. In the dry months, those plants burn easily and help fires spread. Both the CIty and County of San Diego have been making preparations. The city bought a second fire helicopter this year, and it hopes to get approval soon to fly those helicopters at night. And the California Office of Emergency Services gave the county three new fire trucks earlier in June.
