Ben Hueso for council prez?
I’m agreeing with Fran Zimmerman’s response to voiceofsandiego.org’s Scott Lewis who seemed to opine that Ben Hueso is the leading contender for City Council president. First, here’s what Scott said:
An informal poll of insiders would undoubtedly reveal that Hueso is the leading contender for president of the City Council. And the struggle for that post, as I pointed out earlier, is going to be something to watch over coming months.
I sent Scott an e-mail asking what prompted him to say this and he’s not gotten back to me. Hmph.
Now here’s Ms. Zimmerman’s response:
Voice readers would like to know: Why you imagine that Ben Hueso is qualified to be the next president of the City Council or that the next few months will be “pretty big” for him? These bald assumptions are based on exactly what?
What indeed. Tony Young has expressed a strong interest in this position and challenged Scott Peters for it last year (Peters won) and Donna Frye’s said she’d like to finish up her term in that role. While Hueso’s a good Democrat and generally votes the way we’d vote (if we were City Councilmembers—scary thought), he’s not always so articulate. Not to say that being clear and concise is a requirement to be council president, but you do need to move that meeting along, call the shots, keep that mettlesome City Attorney in line.
So Scotty Lew, we’re waiting to hear what made you write what you wrote.
Addendum: To be fair, I barely gave Scott 24 hours to respond.

you think that not being articulate is not the big a deal, until you get someone at the head of an organization who truly isn’t. come watch our painful 2nd monday of the month meetings with krvaric and believe me, you’ll realize the ability to think and speak clearly should always be front and center. he’s painful to listen to and drags the meetings. if hueso can’t speak, he should not have the position. pick donna.
The last thing a council needs is the oft decenting voice running the meeting. Tony Young should be council president. Often with the majority, well spoken and experienced.
