San Diego art of the day

July 22, 2008 - 4:29 pm

I hate to commit myself to doing this once a day, but I literally get a least five or six super sweet pieces of art sent to my inbox every single day.  I want to start showing them off.  The one above is called “metrotham” and it’s by San Diego artist michael james armstrong.  michael doesn’t like the way capitalized letters look, so I’m honoring his aesthetic here.

mja, as he goes by, will be in a group show, Ink Pencil Paint, which opens from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 25.  Here’s some more info about his Gotham-inspired piece:

“hi kinz

the image attached is one half of the diptych i painted for the show.  the piece is called “metrotham”.  originally lee had told me that this was a comic book themed show because it was during con.  so i decided to do metropolis and gotham in arrow deco, which i did.  then it turns out that no one else (besides joey gold) did pieces that were comic related.  oh well, i’m happy with what i did.  so yeah, metrotham is the idea that metropolis and gotham city are both based on new york city.  so i did a diptych portraying both metropolis and gotham as the same city, the same drawing.  the only thing that’s different in both paintings is the palette and a few minor details.  the image attached is the gotham half.  i thought it would work well in grayscale since it’s painted in grayscale.  it’s spray paint on steel, 48″ X 18″.  there are subtle details in texture that can’t be seen in the photo, it’s definitely more striking in person.”‘
