MLK still gets little love in San Diego

August 19, 2008 - 5:02 pm

How much do you want to bet that the public-art project below will never actually be built:

“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Artwork, Sponsored by Caltrans, Artist Team: Philip Matzigkeit and Judy Baca, Status: Design in progress.”

I wrote a story about the strange process behind awarding this particular public-art comission two years ago, and concluded that they were having problems getting all of the money together but construction would likely start in 2007.  Well, it’s 2008, getting closer to 2009, and still not one shovel has hit the dirt at the proposed site.

Every time I check in with the San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture, though, they assure me everything’s still on track.  Why do I not believe them?

Well, Obama won in November and the project is indeed on track though moving at the speed of molasses in winter. We have just completed the “Final Design” stage. Stay posted.
