The cow lab is open. Stop by Liberty Station and see the works of cow-art in progress.
CowParade San Diego is opening its artists’ lab to the public, giving visitors an insider’s look as local artists transform life-sized fiberglass cows into works of art.
Located in the newly renovated Liberty Station, the artists’ lab houses up to 12 cows at once and provides artists with ample work space for their large bovine canvasses. Visitors are invited to watch and interact with the artists as they deconstruct, paint and reform plain, white cows into one-of-a-kind pieces of art to be displayed throughout San Diego county early next year. The lab, located at 2855 Perry Road in the northwest corner of Liberty Station, will be fully accessible to the public each Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for visitors and locals alike to see the creative process behind the cows that will make up the San Diego presentation of the world’s largest public art project,” said Nuffer, Smith, Tucker President Bill Trumpfheller, director of CowParade San Diego. “CowParade San Diego is about making art accessible and interactive from start to finish, and opening the artists’ lab to the public is the first step in this process.”
Artists from San Diego and Tijuana will create approximately 200 cows for display across San Diego county, with the artists’ lab serving as the design center for most of the projects. An auction of the top 50 cows — to be held at the end of the exhibition — will raise funds to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital, The Zoological Society of San Diego and the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.
CowParade has been held in more than 50 cities on six continents and has been
seen by more than 100 million people. From its start in Chicago in 1999, CowParade has evolved in size, creativity and quality with exhibitions in cities such as New York, Paris, Mexico City and Buenos Aires. The event has raised more than $25 million for charities worldwide through live and online cow auctions at the end of each city’s exhibition.
CowParade San Diego is made possible through sponsorships from the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, Liberty Station and the California Milk Advisory Board.
