Late Heather O’Rourke used and abused by DirecTV

October 9, 2008 - 10:20 pm

What was Craig T. Nelson thinking when he agreed to do a DirecTV commercial that profits from the image of Heather O’Rourke, the late actor from Santee who starred as little Carol Anne Freeling in Poltergeist and died after her small intestine burst when she was just 12 years old?

Nelson appears in bed next to a stand-in for JoBeth Williams and responds to O’Rourke’s iconic and oh-so-creepy line, “They’re here,” by peddling DirecTV, and I think it’s in poor taste. Not sure who had to sign off on the deal to allow the use of her image (apparently, the voice is dubbed), but presumably it was MGM, which produced the film. Not sure if the O’Rourke family would have to agree. But, anyway… lame. If you haven’t seen it, here it is:

I was shocked to see this. It is a creepy ad. The family probably had to agree to it. Just a very poor choice by all involved. My opinion.

I have no problem about this commercial, I heard that Heathers mother and sister approved of it before it was filmed saying that its a good tribute to Heather.
