Ex-List cancelled
Back in August, I wrote in Presently Tense that The Ex-List, a Fox/CBS series being filmed in San Diego — mostly in my exploitation-proof neighborhood of Ocean Beach — “will probably fail, and OB can go comfortably back to being an isolated funky little beach town.”
I’m happy to report that I was right.
The show was a disaster. Its creator, Dianne Ruggiero, left last month over “creative disagreements” with CBS, who announced this week that the show has been cancelled after just four episodes, making it the first 2008 show cancelled by the network. I don’t know anybody who even saw it.
So good luck to everyone involved in the production. It was never personal. And to everyone in OB, as you were. Our obscurity has been restored.

I actually liked The Ex List. I saw each aired episode and enjoyed them! I was upset to see NCIS (another murder series) last Friday night in its place. With all the crime shows on television these days I felt like The Ex List was an upbeat alternative for those of us who are sick of all the stresses in life.
Did you not read my column, Kelli? The Ex-List had the potential of putting a whitewashed, phony, idealized version of Ocean Beach on the map in the way the X-Games helped transform PB into Doucheville. Not worth it. And what are you doing home every Friday night? You need to get out more.
Seriously, I liked it too! So d.a.kolodenko, stop being so judgmental about who watches what on which days! I happen to work on saturday mornings! So this show was a perfect relaxing one for me! And at the right time too!
Seriously Jessica, the Friday night comment was a joke. Kelli might have DVR, for all I know. The fact that you have an atrophied sense of humor doesn’t surprise me, though, since you liked the Ex-list, a shallow piece of drivel based on the Disneyesque premise that a woman is incomplete without the “man of her dreams.” And by the way, I am a columnist; my job is to judge. And I hereby pronounce your taste in TV shows LAME.
I’m a former resident of San Diego and I loved watching this show and recognizing some of the spots they were filming at. I enjoyed th show and thought it had a great premise…who hasn’t thought about the “What If Guy” or girl? I thought it really had potential sad to see another show get cut out maybe if they advertised it better the show might have had a shot. As for it’s Friday night line up I think they should have kept Moonlight and put The Ex List on after that at 10. hat would have made for a nice Friday night in for those of us “Thirty-Somethings” that do stay in. F’n network execs…what do they know? Only how to kill of good shows!!!!

Thanks for the double dose of drivel, Shauna. I both loved and enjoyed learning that you both loved and enjoyed The Ex-List.
Thanks also for moving out of San Diego. Still, in the back of my mind, I will always wonder, “What if Shauna and i had met? Maybe she could’ve turned out to be that really sweet and perfect special someone that I would want to marry, since she is a heterosexual and this is California where our marriage would be totally protected from gay people, and we would live happily ever after and the Ex List would never be cancelled.”
I loved this show. I just found out that it is cancelled. I am so bummed.
Who are these Ex-List fans who don’t even read my column? CBS robots on a viral mission?
i really loved the ex list. it reminded me of me and my boyfriend. we dated 2 years ago and then got back together and i know he is the one for me. whats so bad about people still believing in TRUE love. if it weren’t for people like you it would probably still exist. why did cbs cancel it anyways?
Hey d.a. kolodenko maybe we would read your blog if you weren’t an ass to everyone who commented on this article. You could at least listen to others opinions and not whine that your town is geting an ounce of attention; even if people moved there from ONE television show it would be good for the towns economy.
I have to agree with everybody here. The Ex List was a sweet show. No stress, funny, romantic. It was the one show that I looked forward to. And yes I taped it!! I don’t sit home every Friday….just once in a while. The relationship between the friends was great and I loved seeing how each little fling ended up. 1 year ago I reconnected with a man I was madly in love with at 17 years old, but lost track of. It’s now 25 years later and we are now engaged! It’s a great story line in this day and age with the internet and people reconnecting with old friends. Too bad it was cancelled. But I’ll keep looking for it to reappear.
yeah, I liked it too, it was very cute. I didn’t really care for elizabeth reaser in anything else but in this show i actually noticed her she was adorable and likeable, not like in the family stone or grey’s anatomy. i waited for the show last week and nothing finally tonight i figured it had to be cancelled since again it’s not on. and sure enough gone i wish it was still on
I LOVED the Ex List!! I am so disappointed that it was canceled and hope they get some sense and bring it back on! such a fun and fabulous show for us 30 somethings that love a good and refreshing romantic comedy.
Looks like a handful of Ex-List fans have decided to spam my post with a thread of starry-eyed praise for the abruptly cancelled mediocre TV pablum. Nothing you can do will make me any less delighted that my neighborhood will be free of the presence of this nonsense forevermore. Why not direct your trite praise for the candy-coated contrivance to the network that cancelled it instead of wasting my time. And Lily, your uninformed comment about my town’s economy proves that you didn’t read my column. Commenting on something you know nothing about proves who is really being an ass.
I ended up fast forwarding to see the weekly Hunk. The eye candy was worth the recording. For that reason, I was sorry to see it go. What I want to know is who was the EX? I was hoping she would end up with the dog’s daddy. I was sooo hoping the family would stay together and he was the hottest on the show, imho.
OmyGod, i can’t believe they cancelled the ex-list! Like, everybody on the show was so shiny and 2 dimensional. i think i’ll go give money to a psychic to stroke my ego tomorrow! I used to think that the more people you date, the more likely you are to get a disease, but now i understand that it just makes you cute and spunky. Too bad the real Ocean Beach is full of bikers, hippies, Vietnam Vets, free-thinkers, territorial surfers and cranky leftist columnists, because the fake OB on the Ex List made it look like a cartoon paradise where people don’t have to work hard or struggle against city government, greedy developers and slimy Hollywood interlopers to maintain the community’s edgy character, the quality of the ocean water, tide pools, cliffs and marine life or its geographical isolation. Ex-List made OB look like a place full of artfully-decorated do-nothing stupid people who stand around in bathing suits whining about their trite relationships. Now that it’s cancelled, I’ll be stuck watching all the other crappy TV shows I fill my empty life with, and I’ll never get to witness the ruination of that unique little beach town that success of the show would’ve engendered. Oh well, guess i’ll go stuff Twinkies in my eyes. Laterz.
I LOVED the Ex-List! I never saw it of course, but anytime I can get DA’s gonads to explode, I’m all about it.
This SUCKS! Every time a good show come on and I get hooked, it gets canceled. I lived in OB for 8 years and this was my weekly fix on the town I love and miss. SHAME ON YOU CBS for taking away a wonderful, fun show. I will stick to cable shows that seem to be given a longer time to succeed than the big 3 duds.
Dear Carolina, If you think this show had anything to do with OB, you’re either insane or lying about having lived here. Good riddance! And by the way, CBS is probably not reading this blog, but I don’t mind responding to your Spam; I love having these continuing opportunities to bad mouth this weak show and gloat at its cancellation.
Sadly, Ed Decker has no gonads.
I loved The Ex List!! I’m sort of bummed that it was canceled, I’m in my freshman year of college and really stressed, and it’s nice to have a show that I can relax and laugh to. Ok, I’ll admit it wasn’t the BEST thing on T.V., but honestly, what is nowadays! It was a really quirky show and I loved how everyone rode their bikes and hung out. (I go to Davis, so I could relate to living in a small quirky town.) I really enjoyed the show and hope that different networks will sort of get the hint that we’re tired of gory, sad crime dramas. It’s nice to have something fresh! And plus Bella was soo adorable!
:]
Chinadoll, thanks for joining the pointless ex-list spam parade. The show is over. let it go. And since you asked (rhetorically): there have been some good shows that might appeal to you. Go out & rent the DVD of the show Undeclared – it was about college life and it was great. Also check out Mad Men: it’s a drama but is actually well-written and will stimulate your intellect rather than insult it. If you want something fun that’s clever try 30 Rock.
Now turn off the TV and go do your homework!
Lol…I’ll check those out. Thanks for the heads up.
(not being sarcastic)
Oh! And by the way I LOVE 30 Rock.
:]
homework….ewwww.
lol
UMMMM. it was a good show, i have just learned it was cancelled and that really is some bullshit. what chance did it have as a friday night show? none. i did dvr it ever friday and it was a good enough show to keep me watching. i really wanted to know who she would end up with. you cant feed viewers a story and a hopeful ending for a character and then cancel it! and to replace it with that bullshit crap show only old people watch? come on. idiots
AND ALSO……..CBS, YOU HAVE NO GOOD SHOWS, YOUR SHIT STINKS AND I NOW HAVE NO NEED TO TUNE IN TO YOUR RANK ASS BORING EXCUSE FOR A TV STATION. GOOD LUCK
So that’s what happened to Pacific Beach. I’m a San Diego native, but by the time I was old enough to start going out, PB was already Doucheville. I had no idea that it was once a cool place to hang out.
blessings to you c4cor. you actually read the column and had something to say. Just for you, here’s a photograph of PB in 1904, when it was both more cool in some ways and less in others:
