PLAN B: 13th Hole, Pleasure Device @ Bar Pink. There’s something charming about French-Italian indie-rockers 13th Hole. Maybe it’s the way singer Isa pronounces her consonants in English; maybe it’s the fact that they sound like a poppier version of early Blonde Redhead. I can’t put my finger on it. BACKUP PLAN: Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Thrice, Gaslight Anthem @ Cox Arena. -Todd Kroviak
CityBeat’s Plan A was Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, but unfortunately the man had to cancel due to a “personal emergency.” The Casbah has a great replacement show for $5 with local bands, The Minor Keys (think old-school rock n roll with a dash of early Strokes) and The New Archaic (they sound like a, funky, soulful version of Against Me!, not, as their MySpace page suggests, “the Incredible Hulk having sex”).
But stick with 13 Hole at Bar Pink. This should be a killer, raucous show with a band who we’ll be lucky to see back here anytime soon (that is, until, they play Chaser’s on Saturday). Catch them at either show. Or, if you want my advice, run over to Cox Arena, sneak in to see The Gaslight Anthem, who are truly worthy of their recent buzz. If you ever wondered what a young Springsteen fronting Social Distortion might sound like, then atleast check out the song, “The ‘59 Sound.” Been stuck in my head for weeks. Then, watch half of Thrice and head over to Bar Pink for 13 Hole. Who said you can’t do both?
