Hold on there a second! City Council members say to hold off on picking new council prez
Well, the City Council sure is getting antsy about who is going to lead it after current City Council President Scott Peters leaves office. At 4:30 today, three City Council members released a memo insisting that a new council president not be chosen before the newly-elected council members are sworn in, despite discussion of choosing one earlier. Specifically, the authors, Donna Frye, Brian Maienschein, and Kevin Faulconer, cite the municipal code which requires the selection to occur on the first City Council meeting in January. Frye is among the lead contenders for the job, along with Councilmembers Tony Young and Ben Hueso. But the fact that she co-signed the memo Republican Faulconer and the Republican-and-termed-out Maienschein makes this a peculiar group.
Why does everyone want the job so badly? The council president sets the agenda for the City Council and assigns committee memberships and chairmanships, among other duties.
