The seven best websites to track the election as it happens

November 4, 2008 - 7:47 pm

I’m following this election mostly online today, probably with some assistance from Jon Stewart at some point. Here are my favorite sites to refresh as results come in.

The New York Times Presidential Map. Not only does it allow you to zoom in and see which counties have reported results, but you can move a slider and see which counties were so blue as to vote for Kerry or so red as to vote for Bob Dole. The one downside is that it does not appear to automatically refresh, so you have to click it yourself.

Fivethirtyeight.com has been the go-to site for polling analysis this election, but they’re live blogging tonight and offering some really good stathead analysis.

• CNN has a way to pick your three top races to track. They let you pick between your local congressional races and a few select props. But then your races appear on their homepage.

• If you want to follow races in other states and counties, I like USA Today. There’s a box on the right that allows readers to pick initiatives or other races in any state.

• The San Diego County Registrar of Voters will be posting election results as they come in, just as if you were in Golden Hall yourself. They’ll be posting results from all San Diego precincts, so you can see all local elections, local props, and how locals voted on statewide props. Don’t forget to check around 8 p.m., when they’ll be announcing the results of the mail in ballots. for results from the whole state, visit the Secretary of State’s website.

• And of course right here, at the Last Blog on Earth, where you can be sure to find your share of snark and insight, going into the evening and beyond.
