Beneath the bandage: What Sanders means by “temporarily”
When Mayor Jerry Sanders announced his plan to balance the books for this year’s budget, he proposed closing seven libraries and eleven recreation centers “temporarily.” He wouldn’t say how temporary, only that the facilities would likely be closed at least through 2010.
In today’s City Council budget hearing, though, Independent Budget Analyst Andrea Tevlin prodded city staff on the meaning of “temporary.” In particular, she wanted to know if the money saved from the closures was included in the mayor’s five-year financial projection. Chief Financial Officer Mary Lewis said they were, indeed, included, for all five years of the projection. And that means that the mayor has not budgeted for, or planned on re-opening, those buildings.
