District 7 race: Emerald feeling good, says mostly provisional ballots left
Though April Boling conceded the District 7 City Council Race last Wednesday morning to Marti Emerald, there’s still hope for her as the late absentee and provisional ballots are counted. As of last Wednesday, there were 15,500 ballots to be counted. As of Monday night, there were 6,300 votes left, and Emerald’s lead had dwindled from 700 to 450 votes.
Both Emerald and Boling attended the City Council’s Budget Hearing this morning. Boling told CityBeat editor David Rolland that she thinks she has a 3-percent chance to pull it out. Emerald said she isn’t too worried about the ongoing counting.
“People with a lot more experience at this than I have say it should be fine,” she said.
She said she watched a lot of ballots get counted yesterday at the County Registrar’s office, and that as of the end of last night, they had finished all the late absentee ballots. All that remain are the provisional ballots, which are typically filled out by new voters, many of whom, in District 7, are south of Interstate 8 voters. In D-7, that means they are mostly Emerald voters. Emerald said the final tally is expected to be announced Friday night.
