Random thoughts from the city budget meeting
• I’ll say it again: The City Council’s Independent Budget Analyst’s office is by far the best thing about the change to the way the city of San Diego is governed. IBA Andrea Tevlin has the capacity to criticize the mayor’s moves and have her message perceived without the burden of politics. Today, she’s criticized the mayor for not providing enough information to the council and the public, and she’s provided some alternatives to the mayor’s suggestions for budget cuts.
• Mayor Jerry Sanders this morning threw down against the firefighters union, basically saying that anything the firefighters say about budget cuts should be dismissed because, well, unions are bad and can’t be trusted.
• Budget meetings are boring. Government officials desperately need training on lively speaking. Why are they all so monotone in their delivery? Things livened up today when outgoing City Attorney Mike Aguirre launched into his reminder of bankruptcy as an option.
