PLAN A: Earthless, Sleepy Sun @ Bar Pink. Earthless have been mentioned enough in past columns, so focus your attention on Sleepy Sun, a San Francisco sextet whose dreamy, drifting grooves hit all the right psychedelic touchstones. PLAN B: Rodney Crowell Trio w/ Jenny Scheinman @ Belly Up Tavern. Crowell is the kind of songwriter most country musicians secretly wish they could be: an industry insider with a quietly brilliant solo career whose songs have been covered by everyone from The Oak Ridge Boys to Bob Seger.
Part of a storied tradition of Irish rappers that includes such luminaries as House of Pain, and, um, House of Pain, heavy-boozing Kansas City rapper Mac Lethal is at The Casbah tonight with Grieves, Silent Army, vegasaint and South Dakotan hip-hop trio soulcrate music. At 25, Lethal is threatening Atmosphere’s throne as indie-rap’s most confessional songwriter, and he’s not above admitting that he’s “anti-soccer mom, anti-hipster/pro-eating Captain Crunch cereal for dinner,” which should give an accurate portrayal of his target audience.
Meanwhile, over at House of Blues, Misfits‘ Jerry Only and D.I.‘s Casey Royer compete to see how many different touring lineups they can use while still using their original bands’ names. If you’re stoked on seeing The Misfits without Danzig, more power to you. I’ll be at home listening to “Soul on Fire” instead, thanks.
