PLAN A: Deerhunter, Times New Viking, Nite Jewel @ The Casbah. If you can’t make up your mind about Deerhunter, it’ll only take one live performance to turn you into a hater or a believer, especially if Bradford Cox breaks out the summer dress and the lipstick. PLAN B: Luckyiam, Aceyalone, Orko Eloheim, Nature of the Beast @ Jumping Turtle. Former San Diegan Orko Eloheim never got the love he deserved for his drum-and-bass / hip-hop hybrid. Just ask the dudes at Access Hip Hop; they’ll tell you how dope he is. Now that’s he’s relocated to L.A., he’s aligned with that city’s wildly diverse hip-hop underground and is back to show us what we missed.PLAN C: Tom Russell @ Acoustic Music San Diego. The 58-year-old songwriter / painter / novelist might be the least-known musician to have ever appeared four times on Late Night with David Letterman. The El Paso resident is guaranteed to have more than a few interesting border-town stories to tell. BACKUP PLAN: CANCELLED! Fever Sleeves, OAKS, Raise the Guns @ Ruby Room. -Todd Kroviak

Some make the argument that Deerhunter is becoming more inventive and creative. Some say more erratic and disjointed. So it would follow that this could be one of the best or worst shows at the Casbah this year. While both Deerhunter and Times New Viking are undeservingly hyped (see CityBeat’s articles on both here and here), there’s no doubt that they’re both massively polarizing which should make for an interesting show regardless.

NOTE: The Ruby Room show with local metal/hard rock acts Fever Sleeves, OAKS and Raise the Guns has been cancelled but all the bands are playing local shows in the next few weeks. Check em out!

Here’s the rest:

Lauren DeRose at Bourbon Street: I may have given DeRose just-an-okay review in CityBeat’s last Demo Review issue, but her punk-laced pop-rock and live show has made me a believer. Not to mention the sheer catchiness of “Me & My Earthquake.” She’s playing for free from 7-9PM. Start the night off right!

“Back to the Garden” with Eve Selis, Jerry Rainey, Sven-Eric Seaholm, Cactus Twang and Whyte Grano & Nash at Anthology: Another great local showcase with local country and folk artists celebrating Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Come in at 10PM for a late-night “Black Friday” show with Anna Troy and Scarlet Symphony.

The Dollyrots, The Glossines at Bar Pink: Another good one. I saw Amber from The Glossines the other night and was like a fumbling, mumbling little boy with a schoolyard crush.

The Old In Out, BRAAIINS! at Whistle Stop: If you haven’t seem BRAAIINS! yet, do so either tonight or tomorrow. You won’t be disappointed.
