Well, the results aren’t officially official. The vote count hasn’t been certified or anything. But after weeks of watching the county tally provisional and absentee ballots after Election Day, Marti Emerald has mathematically clinched her race to represent District 7 (College Area) in the City Council. The San Diego Registrar of Voters shows that with 50 ballots remaining to be tallied countywide, it’s Emerald 27,910 (50.56 percent) and April Boling 27,297 (49.44 percent), for an Emerald lead of 613 votes.
I called Emerald to see where she was at the big moment, and learned that she’d actually crossed the victory threshold over the weekend.
“I didn’t sign on on Friday, I went on on Saturday and realized we’re down to 500 votes [to be counted], so even if they were all in District 7 and all for April Boling, we’d still win by 127 votes,” Emerald said.
That day, she was in Santa Barbara, visiting her older sister, Sally Lecomte, who had lost her home in November’s Montecito fire.
“We opened a bottle of good champagne and toasted to the future,” Emerald said. “We took a little time out to celebrate what we had to be thankful for. Hey, little sister got elected.”
