Vivian Girls are full of shit

OK, so they made a decent album earlier this year, and they’re all kinda cute, but this video outlines one of the most frustrating problems with indie culture: the formation of elitist communities rather than inclusive networks.

How about this gem of a quote from Vivian Girls drummer Ali Koehler: “Since I live, like, in my own bubble of, like, like, music community, any time I go somewhere where, like, normal people go, I’m like ‘Whoa, I forgot that there’s people like this.’” Clearly, she views herself as different from others. Which is ironic, because I could swear she looks a lot like the tattooed scenesters populating most “underground” venues.

Granted, there’s nothing inherently wrong with following a certain aesthetic in the way you dress or forming a healthy bond with like-minded individuals. But it smacks of irony to follow a similar pattern to the people who made fun of you in high school. The music community is just as, if not more, full of people who “suck a lot,” because they’re usually repeating the exclusive shittiness found in most adolescent social circles.
