The Grammy Award nominations were announced yesterday and the big local winner was Jason Mraz. Mr. Mraz (finally) proved he’s no one hit wonder with “I’m Yours,” which was nominated for “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance” and, most impressively, “Song of the Year,” along with Estelle’s “American Boy,” Adele’s “Chasing Pavements,” Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song” and Coldplay’s (awful) “Viva La Vida.” The good news for Mraz is that all the songs in the category are rather weak and the acoustic, pop-friendly “I’m Yours” will probably appeal to the crustaceous voters in the Recording Academy. The bad news? He’s going against Chris Martin and company who are already the heavy favorite to win. I may have made fun of “I’m Yours” initially, calling it “the cheesiest Jack Johnson rip-off since Jack Johnson ripped himself off,” but I’ll be pulling for him. Interestingly, and not that it matters but it’s kinda funny, “I’m Yours” was also nominated for “Song of the Year” at this year’s San Diego Music Awards. I predicted he would win, but he lost to, no shit, Slightly Stoopid’s “2am”. That’s pretty stupid.

Certainly, another notable nominee is the S.D.- and T.J.-based Nortec Collective side-project Bostich + Fussible, who are nominated for “Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.” The good news? The Academy don’t really know a ton about this category. The bad news? They might know enough to recognize bigger names like Jaguares and Ximena Sariñana, who will also both have the benefit of major-label marketing blitzes. In any case, be sure to check out Kinsee Morlan’s fantastic article on Bostich + Fussible here. They also have a show coming up at the Latinsizer Unicamente at the City Club in Tijuana. Go check em out.

I can’t believe they actually used up two hours of primetime TV for a Grammy nomination program. As if the Grammys weren’t irrelevant enough already. Networks are STRUGGLING.
