Filmmakers in town this weekend
The big Oscar movie opening in San Diego this weekend is Frost/Nixon, even if it’s only appearing at one theater. Then you’ve got Keanu in the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still (he’s not the robot, even if he’s pretty, you know, robotic). But there are several smaller films whose creators will actually be on hand to discuss once the lights come up. Who and where after the jump.
The Matador: San Diego native Scott Dunklee executive produced The Matador, a look at a rising star in the field of, well, bullfighting, and he’ll be at Landmark Hillcrest, along with DP Chris Jenkins, to intro the film and take questions when it’s done. The specifics:
Landmark Hillcrest Cinemas
- Friday, 7:30 pm
- Saturday, 7:30 pm
Take Out: I really liked this little slice-of-hard-knock-life film, about an illegal Chinese immigrant desperate for money, making as many deliveries as possible in the course of a single New York day. The movie looks and feels like a documentary, but is a fictional film, albeit one that was just nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. It opens Friday down at the Reading Gaslamp Cinemas, and directors Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou are in town for a couple of days. The specifics:
Reading Gaslamp Cinemas
- Friday, 7:15 pm
- Saturday, 7:15 pm
- Sunday, 2:40 pm
Repo! The Genetic Opera: Darren Lynn Bousman directed Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV. And now he’s made this beastie of a rock opera, that stars the likes of Paris Hilton and Anthony Head of Buffy fame. It all takes place in an alt.future where organ failures are commonplace, transplants are frequent, and organ repos come into play when you can’t pay your bill. Originally, there was a theatrical run planned for San Diego, but now you can only catch it this weekend over at the Ken. There’s a costume contest on Friday, and on Saturday co-writer/actor Terrance Zdunich and composer/actor Darren Smith will put in an appearance. The specifics:
Ken Theatre
- Friday, midnight
- Saturday, midnight
