City Council Committee choices (cont’d)

December 16, 2008 - 2:05 pm

Update: In an earlier version of this post, I left out that Donna Frye was recommended for the Public Safety committee. At today’s City Council meeting, though, she agreed to let Sherri Lightner take her place on that committee.

Michelle Ganon, the communications director for City Council President Ben Hueso, just faxed over the memos from each council member, listing which City Council committees they’d like to be appointed to.

District 1: Sherri Lightner
Asked for: Land Use & Housing (chair), Natural Resources and Culture, Budget and Finance, Public Safety and Neighborhood Services
Got: Land Use & Housing (vice-chair), Natural Resources and Culture, Public Safety (after agreeing to swap places with Donna Frye)

District 2: Kevin Faulconer
Asked for: Council president pro-tem, Audit Committee (chair), Budget and Finance, Public Safety, Natural Resources
Got: Council president pro-tem, Audit Committee (chair), Land Use & Housing; Rules, Open Government and Inter-governmental Relations (vice chair)

District 3: Todd Gloria
Asked for: Budget and Finance, Land Use & Housing, Public Safety. Requested to chair “any of the above.”
Got: Positions on all three, plus chairmanship of Land Use & Housing, plus member of the Rules Committee

District 4: Tony Young
Asked for: Budget and Finance (chair), Public Safety (vice-chair), Rules Committee, Land Use & Housing
Got: Everything he asked for

District 5: Carl DeMaio
Asked for: Budget Committee (chair), Audit Committee
Got: Budget Committee (member, not chair), Audit Committee, Natural Resources and Culture (vice-chair)

District 6: Donna Frye
Asked for: Chair of either the Rules Committee or the Natural Resources, member of the Budget Committee
Got: Chair of Natural Resources, member of the Rules Committee, Public Safety (but later agreed to allow Sherri Lightner to take her place)

District 7: Marti Emerald
Asked for: Public Safety (chair), Rules Committee, Budget Committee
Got: Public Safety (chair), Budget, Natural Resources

Our quick analysis:

Who fared best: Tony Young

Committee everyone wants to be on: Budget and Finance (seven requests), followed by Public Safety and Neighborhood Services (five requests)

Least popular committee: Audit (two requests—DeMaio and Faulconer) followed by Land Use & Housing (three requests), Natural Resources and Culture (three requests) and Rules (three requests)

Who got stuck on a committee he/she didn’t request: Marti Emerald (Natural Resources), Todd Gloria (Rules Committee), Kevin Faulconer (Land Use & Housing and Rules)

Biggest suck up: Carl DeMaio. Excerpt from memo to Hueso: “Congratulations on your election as Council President. I look forward to working with you throughout the year. I appreciate the opportunity to express our preferences for committee assignments.” (Also “pledges to work cooperatively with my council colleagues and docket any items they recommend for discussion”).
