San Diego’s answer to The Onion

January 13, 2009 - 10:51 am

Candice, CityBeat‘s resident foodie, sent me a link to SD Headliner, a new localized “fake news” site filled with satirical articles like the lead this week, “The City of San Diego lifts ban on Coronado Bridge jumping to curb population growth.”

I sent an e-mail to the contact page on the site and got this in response:

The site was actually created by one person, me.  I use “we” and “us” a lot on the site to make people think the Headliner is something bigger than its really is .

My name is Mike. I’m a 27-year-old computer programmer and have lived in San Diego for 7 years.  I thought of the idea about 6 to 8 weeks ago and got most of the site done during my Christmas break as a small personal side project.  I felt that San Diego deserved its own Onion-like spoof paper, and I have a lot of ideas in my head that I want to get out.  Creating ridiculous/outrageous stories on a regular basis helps balance out the monotony that comes with having an office job.
