What southern township is just loving the San Diego scene right now? Oxford, Mississippi apparently.

The whirlwind of hype swirling around 22-year-old Nathan William’s bedroom-punk project Wavves is unmatched in recent years. Although Williams has only a scant number of live shows on his résumé, he’s already booked several national dates, closely followed by a month-long European tour in February. Since releasing Wavves’ self-titled debut LP late last year, Williams went from little-known to minor phenomenon in less than six months. Originally planned for release on the small Minneapolis label De Stijl, his forthcoming follow-up LP Wavvves has been picked up for wider distribution by Fat Possum Records, former home to The Black Keys and current label for Dinosaur Jr. and Andrew Bird, among others. –Todd Kroviak, as reported in Locals Only in last week’s issue, January 14, 2009.

Now, a mere few weeks later, according to their Skull Kontrol blog and confirmed by member Charles Rowland, local indie duo Crocodiles has signed a two-album deal with the Mississippi-based Fat Possum.

Wavves was also recently featured on a new segment on ABC World News called ‘New Music Monday.’ Wavves was included along with five other artists that guest Ryan Schreiber (founder of pitchforkmedia.com and leading candidate for new Obama post of Douchemaster General) deemed the best five albums to “watch out for” in 2009. And while I rarely agree with General Schreiber, I’ll hand it to him this time for the sake of solidarity. His haircut still sucks though.

Congrats to both bands. Is The Silent Comedy next?
