IBA says city budget situation is even worse
As I write this, Tom Haynes, from the city of San Diego’s Independent Budget Analyst’s office, is telling the City Council’s Budget Committee that the IBA believes the Mayor’s office’s five-year budget outlook, gloomy as it is, is a bit too rosy.
Based on a number of disagreements the IBA has with the mayor’s assumptions, the IBA projects the deficit in fiscal year 2010 is $50.7 million, compared with the mayor’s projection of $44 million. The gap gets bigger down the road. In 2011, the IBA says we’ll be $117.1 million in the red while the mayor says the number is $68.3 million. In 2012, the numbers are $129.9 million (IBA) and $58.1 million (mayor). In 2013, 119.3 million (IBA) and $33.8 million (mayor). In 2014, $115.4 million (IBA) and $20.6 million (mayor).
