San Diego filmmaker wins at Sundance
Last week, I wrote about Destin Daniel Cretton, the San Diego filmmaker whose 22-minute film Short Term 12 was accepted into this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Now, it’s hard to express just how big a deal that really is. Sundance is the premiere fest for American independent film. Over 5600 shorts were submitted, and only 96 made the cut. But Short Term 12, which stars Brad William Henke, and is loosely based on Cretton’s own experiences working in a residential center for troubled teens, is really good. Good enough, in fact, to win the jury prize for Best U.S. Short.
Now that really is a big deal. Cretton told me he was penning a feature-length version of Short Term 12, which would honestly make a solid full-length, and this is the sort of thing that’ll get him noticed and, who knows, interest investors. Either way, big congrats to Cretton. You done good.
