San Diego Shows–Thursday, January 22

PLAN A: Ozomatli @ Belly Up Tavern. Nobody’s too cool to watch this phenomenal live band throw the kind of all-inclusive party you thought only happened in college movies. If you can’t make it out, don’t worry, because Ozomatli booked three straight nights. PLAN B: Kaki King @ Anthology. Among the most unique female guitarists in the world, King’s jaw-dropping guitar-as-percussion technique has Guitar Center employees everywhere pinning her posters to their ceilings. PLAN C: Thorns of Life @ Bar Pink. Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil returns with Thorns of Life, who aren’t too far removed from his first band’s impeccably catchy punk or his second band’s wistful emo. Split the difference and hope for the best. –Todd Kroviak
Seriously, check out Kaki King’s skills:
Oh, and she sings too muthafuckers.
And with all due respect to my colleague Todd, Blake Schwarzenbach is an absolute douche with a bad case of Morrisseyitis.
Honorable Mention:
Louis XIV, Apes of Wrath @ The Casbah–If anything, go for Apes of Wrath.
Ikah Love @ El Dorado Bar
Uncle Joe’s Big ‘Ol Driver, Silent Lune @ the Kensington Club–Reunited and it feels so good!
Ghosts and Mysteries, Bug on a Leaf, 60s Residue. The Shake Ups @ Soda Bar
“Citizenfest IV” with Blessure Grave @ Whistlestop
