Choose your own [Super Bowl Sunday] adventure

January 29, 2009 - 11:39 am

If you’re looking to watch the Super Bowl at a bar or pub this weekend, you shouldn’t have too much trouble—lots of places will be open, and most of them will be offering drink specials that’ll help you make your wad of cash last all afternoon long. Below are some of the highlights, plus some pretty yummy (read: unhealthy) recipes for munchies if you plan to stay home.

The obvious option:

PB’s Typhoon Saloon (1165 Garnet Ave.) is throwing a massive Super Bowl bash, complete with $2 Miller Lites, raffle prizes like plane tickets and laptops, and a team of lingerie-clad women. Nothing says football like a team of lingerie-clad women, right? Let’s just hope they’re airbrushed, like on the flyer.

The downtown option:

Hennessey’s Irish pub (708 4th Ave.) won’t be looking too Irish on Sunday—they’re taking a break from their usual soccer and rugby lineup for some good old-fashioned American football. Come early for the $15 all-you-can-eat buffet, and stay all day for the $2 shots. Or, you know, football.

The off-the-beaten-track option:

If you’re looking for a party that’s a bit more personal, but still want to drink, the Blarney Stone in Clairemont (5617 Balboa Ave.) is always a good choice. You can relax, meet the locals, and participate in their annual chili cook-off. There’s even a cash prize!

But even if it’s a nice quiet afternoon at home you’re after, you’ll at least need some ridiculously unhealthy food to indulge in. Here are some awesome things I’ve found. And by awesome, I mean kind of gross. And by kind of gross, I mean probably delicious.

Frito Lay bake:

Put Fritos on the bottom of a casserole dish.

Cover them with chili.

Cover the chili with corn bread mix and bake.

Top the whole thing with cheese and broil until it melts.

Cheesy Football:

Beat together two 8 oz packages of softened cream cheese, 8 oz of sharp cheddar, half a cup of grated parmesan, and half a cup of Miracle Whip.

Add chopped green onions and black pepper, mix well.

Refrigerate for several hours.

Squish this mess into the shape of a football.

Coat with 1 cup of chopped peanuts.

Add strips of pimento for the lacing.

No Cook Butterfinger Pudding:

Take a tub of Cool Whip.

Mix in a package of instant chocolate pudding mix (don’t actually make pudding, just use the powder).

Fold in crushed up butterfingers.

Cheeseburger Dip:

Combine 1 pound of sharp cheddar, 1 cup of mozzerella, diced tomatoes, diced green chilies, and 8 ounces of ground beef (already cooked and drained).

Microwave on high for three minutes, stir, then microwave for two more minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

Top with green onions and dip your heart out.

Mmmmmm. I can feel my arteries clogging already. Happy Super Bowl!
