Queer news: Yes on 8 donors names must be revealed, says judge
A federal judge ruled today that the Yes on 8 campaign must reveal the names of the donors who contributed more than $100, per state law. Yes on 8, which ran the successful campaign to amend California’s Constitution so that a marriage is between one man and one woman, had refused to divulge the names of donors who gave after October 18, 2008 to prevent what they called harassment. In a press release issued today, Fred Schubert, who ran Yes on 8, cited www.Californiansagainsthate.com and eightmaps.com, as evidence of how pro-same-sex-marriage organizations are calling out Yes on 8 donors.
As it happens, Schubert is right. those two websites are indeed specifically dedicated to calling out donors. The Californians against hate website has a Dishonor Roll and a mission statement that says it’s trying “to draw attention to the major donors to the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign.” Eightmaps.com was only unveiled a couple of days ago, but it’s a Google Maps mashup in which all of the pre-October 18,2008 donors are mapped and listed. Visual learners will like the opportunity to see where anti-gay marriage folks are clustered, but unsurprisingly, they live in high density in the North County and Orange County
The Yes on 8 campaign plans to appeal the judge’s decision.
