Tweeting the seals
I’ll be following the City Council’s discussion about the La Jolla seals issue when they get started on that later this afternoon. I’ll be tweeting under ericwolff, rather than sdcitybeat. The latter account we’re using more for CityBeat announcements.
The City Council will be considering whether to support an amendment to state law to preserve a seal rookery at the La Jolla Children’s Pool. State Sen. Christine Kehoe has said she will introduce the legislation if the mayor and City Council support it. If the council does not support the resolution, seal supporters, having already lost in court at several levels, will be low on options to preserve the seal rookery. The city would be forced to dredge the beach and reopen it for human use.
City Council President Ben Hueso has already asked audience members to bear in mind that the City Council has heard many of the arguments for and against several times in the past. He said he thinks he can limit the arguments from the two sides to 15 minutes each. Good luck with that. Anyway, they haven’t started yet, since Hueso is taking the agenda in order, and the seals are fifth on the list.

What a relief–those seals are one of the only things I like about living in La Jolla!
